Elena Delle Donne made her return to the court a memorable one, scoring 22 points and 8 rebounds as Delaware snapped a two-game losing skid with a 64-46 victory over Providence Tuesday night.
The Preseason All-American had missed the first three games of the year due to her ongoing battle with Lyme Disease symptoms, but was healthy enough to play 27 minutes, and quickly factored into the scoring when she sent the opening tip right to Akeema Richards who finished with a layup 4 seconds into the game.
Providence responded quickly, leading by as many as 5 following a 3-pointer by Tori Rule to go up 9-4, but this evening would belong to the hosts.
Delaware's counter was a 25-6 run, paced by 13 of Delle Donne's 15 first half points, ultimately giving Delaware a 41-25 lead at intermission.
The Blue Hens continued to build on the lead in the second half, getting the advantage to as many as 23 at 51-28 following a Delle Donne jumper, before comfortably holding on for their second victory of the season.
Danielle Parker recorded another double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Lauren Carra added 10 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals.
Rule led the Friars (1-3) with 16 points, while Alexis Harris had a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench.
Delaware is off until next Wednesday when they face off with fellow 2012 mid-major Cinderella St. Bonaventure at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delle Donne remains day-to-day depending on her ongoing treatment for Lyme Disease.
