Coons, Carper vote for Russian trade bill

Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons voted Thursday for a bill establishing permanent normal trade relations with Russia.

The measure cleared the House last month and now goes to President Obama for his signature.

The bill eliminates an obsolete 1974 provision that tied trade relations with the former Soviet Union to the emigration of Jews and other Soviet minorities.

Both Coons and Carper pointed out that Russia is an important market for the U.S. poultry industry, including poultry growers and processors on the Delmarva peninsula.
