MD bus crash injures 5 Newark teachers; driver to be charged
By Frank Gerace

The driver will be charged after a crash in Maryland involving a bus carrying teachers from Newark.

WDEL News spoke with Corporal Watkins of the Maryland State Police, who said the driver of the chartered bus told troopers he was southbound near Aberdeen around 9 Friday morning.

"And allegedly fell asleep at the wheel--the bus then traveled off the roadway, up an embankment, didn't strike anything, and the driver woke up and was able to steer the bus back onto the shoulder, causing no further damage to property or the bus itself."

Five people were taken to hospitals with minor neck and back injuries.

Preliminary information said the bus contained students, that 9 were hospitalized and that one of the injuries might have been serious.

Two passengers later told WDEL News there were in fact no students on the bus, which had been bound for Baltimore's National Aquarium and Science Museum.
