K9 foils gun thief
By Michelle Provencher

It was a K9 unit who can take credit for unearthing the blanket full of stolen firearms hidden in the woods.

22-year-old William Hawkins, of Blades, Delaware, allegedly broke into a home on the 7000 block of Gum Branch Road in Seaford and left with several shotguns, rifles and ammunition wrapped in a blanket.

After hearing reports of Hawkins' being seen near Clark Road earlier in the day, a trooper and his K9 Cid walked through the wooded area nearby and discovered the missing weapons.

Hawkins was arrested by state police at his home and charged with second degree burglary, seven counts of theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of burglar tools and criminal mischief.

He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $108,500 secured bond.
