Gunman killed himself in courthouse shooting
Updated Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 3:40pm
WDEL has learned the gunman that killed two people inside the New Castle County Courthouse Monday also took his own life.
State Police say 68-year-old Thomas Matusiewicz of Texas, armed with a semiautomatic handgun, fired a round of shots into the courthouse lobby that killed his former daughter-in-law 39-year-old Christine Belford and her neighbor, 47-year-old Laura Mulford, both from Newark. Both women were shot in the chest.
Police say Matusiewicz engaged in a gun battle, firing several shots that struck striking Capitol Police officers Michael Manley and Steven Rinehart in their bullet-proof vests.
Matusiewicz then fired a fatal shot into his own head.
Thomas Matusiewicz's son David Matusiewicz was due at the courthouse for a child support hearing, but he's now being held pending a hearing on a violation of his federal probation.
