| VIDEO: Highlights and Celebration of Smyrna's victory | Brent Fleetwood's pin 20 seconds into the 113-pound match clinched Smyrna's first-ever Division I Wrestling Dual-Meet State Championship over Caesar Rodney 36-24 Tuesday night.
The Eagles, who needed a last-match victory to defeat 6th-seed St. Mark's in the semifinals, found themselves behind 24-21 after CR's Kyle Bailey recorded a pin in the 220-pound bout.
The 285-pound contest between Dakota Dalton (Smyrna) and Kyle Bailey (CR) was a stalemate at 1-1 after the three full periods. Both wrestlers managed an escape in the thirty second overtime periods, setting up a sudden-death 4th overtime. With Bailey in the offensive position, Dalton was able to escape within thirty seconds, clinching a vital three points for Smyrna which tied the match at 24.
Smyrna's lightweights put away the match with Alebbo Montanto winning a 5-1 decision at 106, and then Fleetwood's quick work of the 113 bout. A decision victory at 120 completed the scoring for Smyrna, who finished 2nd in last year's championships.
Tyler Carney opened the contest with a 3rd round pin in the 126-pound bout, while CR collected three pins from Zach Parker, Micah Hight, and Bailey, but it wasn't enough for the Riders.
