Salesianum overcame foul trouble and tough defense from Friends to win their regular season finale 42-41 Tuesday night.
Leading scorer Donte DiVincenzo managed just six points while fighting the combination of three first half fouls and tough man-to-man defense from the Quakers' Ben Hanson.
His foul trouble was highlighted in a bizarre sequence in the final seconds where DiVincenzo was fouled while grabbing a rebound with 6 seconds left and the Sals leading 42-40. As the whistle blew in the very loud gymnasium, DiVincenzo appeared to not hear it, and while falling out of bounds threw the ball at a fallen Quaker in an attempt to save possession. The officials interpreted the play as unsportsmanlike conduct, giving the sophomore a technical foul to foul out of the game.
DiVincenzo would normally have taken the one-and-one free throws, but with his disqualification, Isaiah Davis missed the front end to keep it a two point game. The technical free throws were then taken by Larenz Thurman, who could only manage one out of two to make it 42-41.
Thurman then ended up with the basketball near the free throw line for one last shot, but his contested attempt came up short, ending the game.
The contest between two teams likely to host games early in the state basketball tournament was a physical battle featuring several offensive fouls, which put DiVincenzo and Brian O'Neill in early foul trouble for the Sals, while Malcolm Delpeche also had to sit extra minutes for the Quakers.
Friends scored the opening five points of the game, but then Salesianum went on an 11-2 run to take the lead, being sparked by a 3-pointer off the hands of Isaiah Davis.
Salesianum's lead never stretched past 7 points the rest of the way, with Friends only taking a brief 18-16 lead early in the 2nd quarter.
Both teams will learn their tournament seedings on Friday, with Salesianum likely to get an opening-round bye.
