Conserving energy and money were the motives behind Red Clay School Board's move to modernize heating, cooling, electric and water systems throughout the district.

The $20 million project won't add a dime to the budget, though. That's thanks to a 20-year bond issued by the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility. The thousands of dollars in yearly energy savings will go toward paying Seiberlich Trane, the company chosen to install the building upgrades.

But what if these innovations don't put a dent in utility bills? Assistant Superintendent of District Operations Ted Ammann has an answer.

"They guarantee that we'll save enough to make the payments, and if for whatever reason the energy savings don't come to pass, Seiberlich Trane would be making up the difference between the expected savings and the actual savings. So there would be no impact to the taxpayers."

Last year the DSE issued bonds to the Department of Corrections and Delaware State to pay for conservation projects.

"It'll be the first time that a school district in the State of Delaware is doing one of these projects, but we're basing our project on some of the previous successes."

School Board members approved a measure to enter into contract with Seiberlich Trane, which is based in New Castle, at their monthly meeting Wednesday night.

Building work will begin this summer, starting with A. I. duPont High School.
