Newark City Council honored a longtime city employee who is retiring in late March during its Monday night meeting.

Council presented a resolution honoring Linda Burns, who began working as a typist in the city's secretary office in 1971.

Burns was promoted in 1982 to become a secretary for the police department's Criminal Investigations Division. She also served as a secretary with the city's Memorial Day Parade committee for 34 years.

"Generally I got to know the city and its citizens and I felt that it was really important," Burns said.

While working with the police department, Burns worked with six police chiefs and 12 lieutenants. She says she also encountered a wide variety of people.

"Whether they're good, bad or indifferent, whatever reason rings them to the police department you have to keep that in mind and not let it go beyond the walls of the police department," she says.

Newark Mayor Vance Funk says Burns' work with the Memorial Day committee was so significant, that in 2011 she was recognized with a Jefferson Award, one of the city's most prestigious honors.

"The amount of dedication she gives to the job is probably not matched by anyone," Funk says.

Burns says after she retires on March 28, she and her husband plan to move to Rabun County in northeast Georgia.
