VIDEO: Highlights and Reaction of Newark and Sussex CentralNewark scored the first eleven points of the game, but then had to hang on to defeat Sussex Central 59-50 in the DIAA Boys' Basketball 1st Round Thursday night.
The Yellowjackets came out firing with Jahsun Green hitting a pair of baskets and Xavier Purnell also adding to the opening 11-0 run which took just 3:10 off the clock.
After the Golden Knights finally got on the board just past the midway point of the opening quarter, the run extended out to 18-4 after a Marquis Clark basket before Sussex Central scored the last 5 points of the quarter.
The visitors began to settle in the second quarter, stretching that run to 9-0 after a Tarez White basket cut the deficit to 18-13.
Momentum once again swung the hosts way as Newark scored the last six points of the half, including a Shikei Blake 3-point play late in the opening sixteen minutes to make it 29-20 at the break.
After Newark (16-5) pushed the advantage to 32-20, Shyheim Ayers went to work for Sussex Central, hitting a pair of threes in a 15-3 run that tied the game at 35.
Sussex Central (12-9) would never be able to get over the hump, as Newark scored the last four points of the quarter, and despite twice having the ball down just one in the last few minutes, the Golden Knights never got the key basket, and Newark steadily pushed away.
Blake led all scorers with 22 points, while Clark added 13. Ayers hit five 3-pointers for Sussex Central on his way to 15 points, with Tarez White chipping in with 12.
Newark will face 5th-seed St. Andrew's at Smyrna High School Saturday at 1pm.
