DMA claims Delaware-only hockey title
Delaware Military Academy's Nate Gemmato scored four goals as the Seahawks claimed the Delaware State Varsity Championship with an 8-1 victory over A.I. duPont Thursday night at the Pond.
After falling in the DSHA championship game last week, DMA quickly put that behind them by by quickly jumping ahead on Gemmato's first goal of the game just 2:17 into the contest.
Gemmato then scored again with 1:53 remaining in the opening period, with both goals assisted by Nick Burns and Robert Thornton.
Four goals were then scored in under three minutes early in the second period, with Ryan Jones' goal for AI blanketed by an earlier tally by Derek Golembrosky, and then goals by Burns and Gemmato. Gemmato then added his 4th of the night at the 10:53 mark. Thornton completed the 2nd period scoring with a goal from Burns and Gemmato with 1:26 left in the period.
Golembrosky's second goal of the game finished the scoring with 2:09 left.
Gemmato finished with six points (4G, 2A), while Thornton added five (1G, 4A).
Haden Spence made 18 of 19 saves for DMA, including stopping a penalty shot with his team only leading by one in the opening period. Trevor Sheftz made 27 stops for A.I.
DMA's championship came in a Delaware-only tournament after the main DSHA tournament was won by Avon Grove, one of two Pennsylvania teams in the league.
