Federal judge says bribery case will proceed

A federal magistrate has ruled that a man charged with accepting a bribe while working for the State Department in Afghanistan should stand trial on corruption charges.
The judge ruled after a hearing Thursday that prosecutors had established probable cause that Kenneth Michael Brophy violated laws against public officials accepting illegal gratuities and government employees being paid to help prosecute a claim against the United States.
Brophy is accused of taking $30,000 from an Afghan company that he supervised in a prison renovation in Kabul after helping it appeal the termination of other U.S. contracts.
Brophy's attorney argued that he shouldn't be prosecuted because he was not a government employee, and because the payment he received was not for anything he did in his official capacity as a contract employee.
