Denn reaches out to clergy to find foster families

The number of foster kids outnumbers the amount of available families for placement by two to one.

So Lt. Gov. Matt Denn's is reaching out to clergy to recruit more foster families.

"When you have more families, then you have more choices in terms of where to best place a kids, and you also don't have to have more than one kid living in a home, when ideally, you wouldn't.

He'll be reaching out to Houses of Worship in Wilmington, New Castle, and Dover throughout the weekend.

"We thought that it would be a place for people who might be of a mind and have a heart to try to help out some of these problems, where we might be able to find some folks like that. And the other advantage of working through Houses of Worship is that the clergy tend to know their congregations pretty well," says Denn.

The shortage of foster families is a nationwide problem. Denn says so far his efforts have led to some families beginning the long process of becoming foster parents.

"We don't want people to just sign up to be a foster parent. It's a very big responsibility, and there are a lot of commitments so what we're asking people is just to come to an orientation to find out more of what's involved and can decide if they want to go through the training process to become one," says Denn.
