Blue Hens bats rally past Wilmington
Delaware blasted three home runs as they overcame an early deficit to defeat intra-state rival Wilmington University Tuesday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Division II Wildcats (13-9) jumped ahead to a 7-2 lead after 2 1/2 innings thanks to a 5-run second inning thanks to 3 walks, an error, and then RBI hits by Brendan Fallers and Josh Hampton.
A pair of 2-run innings in the 3rd and 4th cut that lead down to one, only to see Wilmington counter with 2 runs on just one hit in the 5th.
The floodgates opened for the Hens in the 6th however, as Jimmy Yezzo and EJ Stolzfus each cracked three-run homers to push Delaware ahead 12-9.
Nick Ferdinand added an insurance run with a solo home run in the 8th inning to complete the scoring.
Eric Buckland earned the win for Delaware (11-8) by tossing five perfect innings of relief to end the game to improve to 2-1.
Armando Estrada (0-3) picked up the loss by giving up both of the 6th inning blasts.
Delaware snapped a two game losing skid, and have now alternated wins and losses with Wilmington over the past six meetings.
