A Newark father and stepmother, accused of locking their starving 12-year-old son in a room for three months, have been indicted on charges of child abuse.

The Attorney General's office says Robert Hohn and Shannon Watterson are the first couple to head to trial under the state's new child abuse statute.

The couple was charged in November of last year after the malnourished, barefoot boy escaped from his room and ran to a neighbor's house.

They face a host of charges, including assault, child abuse, and child endangerment. They're both behind bars on nearly $300,000 bail.
