Controlled burn planned for Brandywine Creek park
Delaware state officials say they plan to intentionally burn 16 acres of meadow and shrubs at Brandywine Creek State Park near Wilmington.
Officials say the burn is expected to occur between today and Sunday during the middle of the day, depending on weather conditions. The burn is expected to take a few hours. The main goal of the burn is to improve habitat for nesting grassland species such as the Eastern meadowlark, the grasshopper sparrow and a pair of American kestrels that have nested in the park since meadow restoration began several years ago.
The prescribed burn is being coordinated by the Delaware Forest Service, which will provide key staff and conduct the burn.
