Delaware trailed West Virginia by 7 points at the half, but it could have been worse without the contributions of junior Kelsey Buchanan.
After averaging only 8 minutes per game all season, Buchanan played 11 minutes in the first half, chipping in 4 points and 3 rebounds, 2 of them on the offensive glass, as Delaware beat the Mountaineers, 66-53, in an NCAA tournament first round game at the Bob Carpenter Center.
She finished with 10 points, a season high, and tying her career high set a year ago against UNC Wilmington in the CAA tournament. In addition, her contributions were such that coach Tina Martin started Buchanan in the second half, continuing to use the big lineup that paid dividends in the first half.
It worked in the second half as well, as the Mountaineers went more than 7 minutes without scoring a field goal.
Buchanan ended up playing a career-high 31 minutes, including all 20 in the second half, and grabbing 5 rebounds to go along with her 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting.
