Newark Mayor: Harris Teeter withdraws letter of intent
By Tom Lehman

Newark's Mayor says a Harris Teeter supermarket won't be coming to a local shopping center, after the company withdrew a letter of intent.

Mayor Vance Funk made the announcement that the grocery chain was no longer interested in moving into the Newark Shopping Center on his Facebook page Tuesday.

Funk tells WDEL the company's interest was contingent on possible road and traffic improvements but also upon the successful completion of a marketing survey.

He says he spoke with a company official about the results of a marketing survey, he found out that the company would have wanted to obtain an alcohol beverage control license to sell beer and wine.

"That wasn't possible because there's already a liquor store in the center and to the best of my knowledge, they have fifteen years left on the lease," Funk says.

He also says the Newark Shopping Center approached the owners of that liquor store about purchasing their license, but a deal couldn't be reached.
