Delle Donne earns Player of the Year honor
By Sean Greene

Elena Delle Donne became the first Blue Hens' athlete to be named the top athlete in his or her sport since 1999 when she was honored with the Honda Award as the top women's college basketball player in the country.

The honor caps a busy month where Delle Donne was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press, the Wooden Award, and several other national publications.

Delle Donne was selected No. 2 in Monday's WNBA draft, and will begin her professional career with the Chicago Sky next month.

The Honda Award qualifies Delle Donne as a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year at the Women's Sports Awards on June 24 in Los Angeles.

The Ursuline alum joins men's lacrosse's John Grant (1999), baseball's Kevin Mench (1998), and softball's Audie Kujala (1977) as Delaware's top players in the country.
