Federal bill would help local breweries expand
By Amy Cherry

Breweries from Twin Lakes in Greenville to Fordham in Dover would be able to expand under new federal legislation.

Senators Carper and Coons are cosponsoring the Small Brewer Reinvestment and Expanding Workforce Act that would reduce the excise tax on each barrel of beer brewed.

Under current law, brewers pay an 18-dollar excise tax per barrel of beer. If the legislation passes, any beermaker, who's brewing fewer than two million barrels a year would only have to pay 7-dollars per barrel.
