Wilmington's Gemmell 3rd in open water swim nationals
By Associated Press

Alex Meyer and Christine Jennings have won their respective 10-kilometer races at the U.S. open water national championships to earn berths at this summer's world meet in Barcelona, Spain.

Meyer won the men's race at Lower Castaic Lake north of Los Angeles on Friday in 1 hour, 54 minutes, and 58.947 seconds. He made his move over the final 300 meters, passing leader Sean Ryan, who finished second in 1:55:01.253. Charter School of Wilmington alum Andrew Gemmell was third in 1:55:11.136. Gemmell won the U.S. nationals in 2012.

The women's race came down to five swimmers with 500 meters to go. As Jennings' rivals drifted right, she veered left and was able to outkick the others to the finish line. She touched first in 2:02:14.336.
