A New Castle man is dead in a horrific crash that tied up traffic for hours on I-495 southbound Saturday at noon.

State Police say a 49-year-old man was killed when he tried to change lanes and his pickup truck struck the back of a tractor trailer. The man's car became lodged underneath the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 60-year-old Floyd Beverly, Jr., of Virginia Beach, wasn't hurt.

A spare tire was ejected from the victim's truck bed and struck a third car, which caused minor vehicle damage but didn't hurt anyone.

Traffic on I-495 southbound was completely shutdown, north of Edgemoor Road, near Holly Oak Road, for several hours. Traffic on I-495 northbound was also affected for a short time as a State Police helicopter landed and took off from the scene.
