There are certain things you expect from the DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game: Participants and their hand-to-hand buddies bonding together, new friendships made as rivals become teammates, and a member of the Booth family on the field.
When Sussex Central's James "Butch" Booth takes the field Saturday with the Gold Team as part of the 58th Annual Delaware All-Star Game, he will become the 8th member of his family to strap on the pads and compete with Delaware's top gridiron seniors.
Butch will join his brothers Jake (2001) and cousins Buckie (1995) and Spencer (2004) to represent his generation of family in the game. Before them, Butch's father Joe played in the 1976 game, while his uncles Al (1970), Spencer (1972), and Jim (1976) all represented the Golden Knights and the Gold Team in the game.
Being recommended for the game by his coaches and athletic director is something Butch says his family doesn't take lightly. "It's a tradition, it's something we strive to do because it's such a good cause and all of us love to do it and we love the atmosphere."
The cause is representing DFRC, the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with Intellectual DisABILITIES, and his "buddy" in the program is Garth Layfield, the son of one of his coaches at Sussex Central. Butch says their favorite activity so far during the past half-year of the program was one of the bowling events.
Butch is off to Salisbury (Md.) University in the fall where he will join the Sea Gull football program which has won the last two Empire 8 Conference Championships and corresponding bids to the Division III National Football Tournament.
