The Clifford Brown Jazz Festival began Wednesday night, honoring one of Wilmington's finest musicians.

Among those volunteering with the festival was Hortense Priest, who's participated in the event for 23 years. She attended Howard High School with Clifford Brown and fondly remembered her former classmate.

"We knew exactly where he lived on Poplar Street and it was a small community so it was nice to see one of our members become famous," Priest says.

The Benny Golson Quartet kicked off the event, with Jacey Falk performing as vocalist. Falk says Clifford Brown is a role model for Wilmington residents.

"You really can make it you know, and Clifford Brown is an excellent example of that," Falk says.
