Dave Gula, a principal planner with Wilmington Area Planning Council, says plans to construct the Newark Regional Transportation Center at UD's STAR campus are beginning to actualize.

"The project's gone from planning concept phase to actual preliminary engineering," Gula says. "The environmental studies are completed and we're really moving into final design to put a station out there that will serve the near-term and long-term future.

Gula says the new train station would be about 1,200 feet west of the current one, on the University of Delaware's Science Technology and Advanced Research campus. He says it would be about 1,500 square feet inside the building.

"We're building an access and parking lot to get you to that building," he says, "We're also building pedestrian pathways that will get you to the building. The building will be substantially larger than what exists now, what it is now is essentially a guard shack and ticket sales."

The proposed design, as it was presented Monday night, would include a waiting area and bathrooms, elevators, and a covered walkway above the tracks to reach the departure area for passenger trains.

He says the final design phase will finish up next Spring and construction is tentatively expected to begin in Fall 2014.
