36 officers sworn in to combat drunk driving

More than three dozen officers are sworn in to participate in Checkpoint Strikeforce that kicks off next week just in time for July 4th.

The swearing in ceremony authorizes these officers to make arrests in other jurisdictions.

"In 2013, we had 42 fatalities, 34 percent of which have been alcohol-related. In 2012, we had 116 fatalities, nearly half of which were alcohol-related," says Attorney General Beau Biden, who administered the officers' oath.

The officers participating in the program are from police forces in Wilmington, Newark, Middletown, and the University of Delaware.

Last year, officers in the program made 2,200 arrests at 56 checkpoints up and down the state
