A Rehoboth beach man is dead and his wife is in critical condition after they were hit by a vehicle after the fireworks show in Dewey Beach.

State police say 79-year-old Roy Love and his 75-year-old wife Helene were crossing from the median on State Route 1 southbound in Dewey Beach when they stepped out into the left lane and were hit by an SUV.

Police say the couple were taken to Beebe Medical Center, where Roy Love died. Helene Love was later airlifted to Christiana Hospital, where she was in critical condition at last check.

Police arrested the driver, 25-year-old Matthew O'Connor of Washington, D.C. He's charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was released. Police say more serious charges may be filed.
