Laura Smith is one half of the husband-and-wife team that runs Evan W. Smith Funeral Services in Wilmington.

"I had a close relative that passed away. And I think what caused my interest was that I didn't have an understanding of what was going on," she said.

Evan Smith got into the business at 15 after watching his dad leave for work at a funeral home and not knowing what he was doing.

"We were just always intrigued about what happened behind the curtain," Evan said.

The young couple met in mortuary school, and opened their funeral home five years ago on Union Street in an old bank building.

"We're trying to serve and give traditional funeral services, but with a more upbeat, comforting feel. We want to dispel the old myths of the old, dark, smelly funeral homes," he said.

Innovation in the business includes Internet and Facebook memorials, and new technology.

"Picture urns, digital urns that allow you to have a story or a voice of the loved one, you can turn cremains into diamonds - that was unheard of 10 years ago," he said.

What do they like about their work?

"You have to want to satisfy people, and you have to be able to work with people in one of their worst states, so, it's a little bit of ministry, some spiritual, some psychology, and then it's a mixture of business as well," he said.

There is a fine line between tragedy and comedy. Laura's email address is 'Lady Mortician,' and she says her friends don't like it.

"They've actually asked me if I have a different email address with just my name so I don't scare people away," she says.
