A nine-year-old girl is safe, but her mother is in critical condition after being hit by a car as they tried to cross Route 13 near New Castle.

State Police say Carmen Ross and her daughter stepped off the grass median of North DuPont Parkway near Memorial Drive shortly before 10:00 last night, when Ross was hit by a car driven by Farel Deshazor of Newark.

Ross remains in critical condition at Christiana Hospital. Her daughter was not hit by the car.

No charges have been filed, but an investigation into the accident continues.

State Police remind pedestrians to use cross walks, and dress in light colored clothing when walking at night.
