The watermelon season is looking very promising this year due to heavy early-summer rains.

Delaware has shipped fresh high quality melons for more than 100 years, producing 100 million pounds annually and brought in $13.6 million last year alone.

To celebrate the success of the melons, the Mar-Del Watermelon Association will a free watermelon giveaway on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The giveaway will take place on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk along with a host of other events such as a watermelon-carving competition and a watermelon-eating competition.
