In the fall of 2014, downtown Wilmington will be home to a new charter school: the Delaware MET.

"It is a school that students can follow their passions," says School Leader Amy Cantymagli.

She explains the Big Picture Learning model empowers students to get involved in their future by picking their own internships.

"It's very much student led so students decide what they're interested in. They come up with a list of places that they want to learn more about," she says.

Starting on the first day of ninth grade, students will learn vital skills to secure those crucial internships.

"Being able to make professional phone calls, provide professional e-mails, also learning how to present yourself to others," she explains.

The internships they'll handpick are much more than menial tasks.

"It relaly involves the mentor allowing the student to become part of the organization." Catymagli says students will use a project they develop with their mentor and work on it at the business and in the classroom.

Cantymagli says the big picture learning model has a 92-percent graduate rate and with personalized learning plans for each child, it enables their success, but they need help from the community too.

"The beauty of the school is it's really allowing the people of Wilmington become part of the school and take credit for the success of the school," she says.

Delaware MET's doors will open an undecided location, with more than 250 students in ninth and tenth grades with the school adding a grade level each year. They'll begin accepting applications in November of 2013.

Delaware MET is named after the first Big Picture Learning model, The Met in Providence, RI.
