Wilmington police say a 31-year-old New Castle man was shot in West Center City Friday afternoon.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 7th and N. Washington Streets around 12:40 p.m. However, 911 dispatchers notified officers that the victim was in the 600 block of W. 9th Street.

After arriving, police say officers found the victim, who was lying on the ground and was suffering from gunshot wounds to the right arm and lower back.

Police believe the man left a corner store at the intersection of 7th and N. Washington Streets when another man began shooting at him. The shooter, who is described as being six feet tall and in his mid-twenties, then fled in an unknown direction.

The victim is listed in serious but stable condition at Christiana Hospital.
