The Wolverines plan to start five underclassmen, a junior, three sophomores, and a freshman, against the Pride in the first ever home night game in program history. This coming a year after Wesley graduated three big men off the line.
The "senior" member of the group will be junior Alex Niezgoda, a 5'11", 262 pounder out of Dover High School. The Hartly native is sliding over from guard to replace three-year starter Tim Putman. He says moving into a leadership position amongst the front five is more than just excelling within the playing field.
"It's a lot of off-the-field work as far as film, studying playbooks, knowing the schemes, and knowing the offensive coordinator's plan for the game."
The sophomores joining Niezgoda on the line are left tackle Temi Adebayo, who moves from right tackle, left guard Devin Filliben, who picked up reps at defensive line before switching to offense midway through last season, and new starter Matt Schmidt at right guard. Freshman right tackle DJ Taylor completes the front five.
All will be looking to protect first-year starter Joe Callahan (a sophomore) at quarterback, with senior Eugene Byrd listed as the starting tailback. Byrd scored twice in Wesley's scrimmage against the College of Faith.
No. 5 Wesley and No. 20 Widener meet Friday at 6pm at Miller Stadium. WDEL will have the call beginning at 5:30pm.
