Delaware rolled up 35 first half points en route to a 42-21 win over the Delaware State Hornets at Delaware Stadium Saturday.
Trent Hurley passed at will through the Del State defense, going 15 for 17 in the first half for 250 yards and 3 TD's, two of them to Rob Jones and one to Michael Johnson. Jones also returned a punt 62 yards for a score in the first half as the Blue Hens piled up 303 first half yards.
Delaware State managed a 5 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to make it 14-7, but the Blue Hens continued to pour on the points for the rest of the half, leading 35-7 at the intermission.
In the second half, Delaware was content to sit on its lead. Delaware State pulled to within three touchdowns on a 13 play, 74 yard drive that ended with a 7 yard touchdown pass to Malik Golson, his second scoring catch of the game. Del State had a chance to get three points closer, but a 32 yard field goal attemot was blocked by Laith Wallschleger, his 5th career block, tying the school record.
After the blocked field goal, Delaware went on a 9 play, 80 yard drive that ended with Hurley throwing a 25 yard scoring toss to tight end Nick Boyle, to make it 42-14 with 9:49 remaining.
The final score of the game came on a bizarre play. Delaware intercepted Del State quarterback Esayah Obado, but coughed up the football on the return. Obado scooped it up and ran it in for a Hornets score to make it 42-21.
Trent Hurley completed 24 of 31 passes for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns...the yards and touchdowns are career highs for Hurley. Nine different receivers caught passes for the Blue Hens.
For the second straight game, Delaware piled up yardage, most of it through the air, as they averaged 7 and a half yards per play. Delaware gained 456 yards, 328 through the air, as they raised their record to 2-0.
Delaware plays its first road game of the year next Saturday, at Navy.
