Colonial School District is implementing new safety precautions at George Read Middle School - in the wake of a threat against the school last week.

Superintendent Dorothy Linn tells WDEL effective one week from now students will no longer be permitted to carry book bags, backpacks, purses, musical instruments and sports equipment through the hallways.

"There will be no book bags or backpacks throughout the day rotating around with the kids as well as coats and jackets and hoodies will be required to go into the lockers," says Linn.

Linn says lockers will also be inspected.

"There will be random locker searches throughout the year, and also there's going to be an increased police presence," says Linn.

Linn tells WDEL these school safety measures will go into place, eventually, at all secondary schools in the Colonial School District.

A meeting will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the school's auditorium in New Castle for parents to voice their concerns and ask any questions.

As for the threat against George Read, officials say the investigation is ongoing.
