New Route 1 to I-95 NB ramp open to traffic

Getting to or from the Delaware beaches and the Christiana Mall has just gotten a lot easier ahead of the upcoming holiday shopping season.

You'll no longer have to merge across five lanes of traffic to head north to Wilmington from the Delaware beaches or to do your tax-free shopping.

"For the two-and-a-half years, I've watched people queue up on 95 southbound waiting to get through that cattle chute. I've come up here in the morning and watched people queue up all the way back to Route 40," says DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt.

Bhatt tells WDEL the two-lane ramp is a massive improvement to the state's busiest intersection that's been a nightmare for commuters for years.

"All of that traffic that's funneling through here right now will be able to move at a higher speed safely through here," he says.

The project too 650,000 hours of labor and more than 10,000 tons of steel.

At the end of summer, a similar flyover ramp opened for southbound travelers. This ramp is the final major step in the $150 million project that's funded through state and federal dollars.

But a little more work is left.

"The ramps to the mall, the stuff on the north side towards Churchman that we want to get completed by Thanksgiving because we know there will be a lot of traffic trying to get in here," he says.
