Wesley falls on Rowan's homecoming
Rowan backup quarterback Bill McCarty hit Frankie Goris on a 71-yard pass with 3:03 remaining, pushing the Profs to a 24-17 upset victory over No. 11 Wesley Saturday afternoon.
The Profs seemed to have thing under control when Dominic Caruso returned his second interception of the day 62 yards for a touchdown and a 17-3 Rowan lead with 14:46 left to play.
Wesley, as they have done several times this year, mounted another frantic fourth quarter rally, with Rick Jackson scoring on a 2-yard run and a 15-yard pass from Joe Callahan to tie the game with 4:34 remaining.
After two rushes by Withler Marcelin went for just two yards, Rowan decided to throw a flag route on 3rd-and-8, and Goris had a step on his defender, corralling the ball near the left sideline, and then turning upfield for the deciding score.
Wesley had one last chance, getting all the way to the red zone before Callahan threw a jump ball intended for James Okike which was intercepted, Rowan's 4th of the day, ending the Wolverines' hopes.
The game was tied 3-3 at halftime after the offenses could only muster short field goals by Jon Storck and Dan Dawson in the opening 30 minutes.
McCarty, who entered the game after starter Paul Hamersma suffered a leg injury, drive his team 50 yards, converting a 4th-and-goal from the 2 on a touchdown pass to 6-foot-4 Ed Eisenhart to take a 10-3 lead.
Wesley, who has made 8 straight postseason appearances, will likely need help to make a 9th, as they suffered their second Division III loss.
The Wolverines have one Division III game remaining to end the season against Alfred State, but go out of Division III for their next two games, including a matchup with Menlo (Cal.) Saturday at Miller Stadium.
