AP PhotoPhiladelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says an independent commission will review the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections in the wake of a deadly building collapse that killed six people.
The review will be led by former U.S. Attorney Peter Vaira. The 15-member panel includes construction experts, university professors, union members and city officials.
Philadelphia Treasurer Nancy Winkler, whose 24-year-old daughter was among the victims of the June 5 collapse in downtown Philadelphia, had called on the city to review the operations of the Department of Licenses and Inspections.
The family released a statement Thursday praising the Nutter administration and expressing hope that changes to L&I will be made "to make sure such a disaster can never happen again."
A grand jury is already investigating the collapse, and a demolition subcontractor faces involuntary manslaughter charges.
