Delaware officials discuss health care reform

Delaware has updated the number of people who have enrolled for health insurance through the state's marketplace.

"We have 136 enrollees," says Delaware's Department of Health and Social Service Secretary Rita Landgraf at a Health Care Commission meeting Thursday.

She points out the state's numbers are different than the federal government's numbers because Delaware tracked the number of enrollees through November 12th, as supposed to November 2nd.

Landgraf says the state is also helping those still having problems.

"In addition to health.gov, we are actively helping individuals access the system," she says.

Landgraf adds that visitors to Choose Health Delaware's English site total over 119,000 with an average visit of 2:37, while the Spanish site is over 8500 with an average time of 2:48.

Delaware's Insurance Commissioner reacts to changes to the Affordable Care Act

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is expressing concern over President Obama's latest administrative fix that allows insurers to keep offering current plans for a year even if they don't meet the Affordable Care Act's minimum requirements.

State Insurance Commissioner Karen Weldin-Stewart tells WDEL she typically subscribes to the NAIC beliefs, but this time they're wrong.

"We're way ahead of a lot of the other states. We have more plans, we have people signing up; we have more information on our web site. No, I do not see it being chaotic," she says.

Weldin-Stewart says she doesn't believe the White House's latest fix to the troubled Health Insurance Marketplace will undermine it. She doesn't believe it will lead to higher premiums either.

"Insurance companies are not required to allow this, an insurance company might say, 'I'm not gonna do that,'" says Weldin Stewart.

Older plans won't be available to new consumers on the marketplace in 2014.
