State makes deal with insurers to extend cancelled plans

State officials say an agreement has been reached with health insurers to grant limited renewal of policies that would have been discontinued Jan. 1 because of the new requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

The development affects about 12,000 Delawareans who had received cancellation notices prior to President Obama's announcement on Nov. 14 that he would allow health insurers to extend existing health plans into 2014.

Until residents informed their health insurance plans will soon be canceled because of the Affordable Care Act.

Those with policies whose term of coverage was to end on March 31, 2014 now have until Dec. 31 to renew their policy for another year.

Policy entered after Jan. 1 must be in compliance with Delaware law.

Anyone with questions about their policies should call their agent or broker.
