The City of Wilmington says 8 firefighters will lose their jobs after their union voted not to pass up pay hikes for Fiscal Year 2010.

Members of International Association of Firefighters Local 1590 voted 58-57 Monday
night not to accept a deal in which they'd forego raises to help the city close its
projected 20 million-dollar budget shortfall.
The vote means 8 firefighters will be laid off July first, and the remaining 162 will
see their pay increase by 2 and a quarter percent.
City Council's scheduled to vote Thursday on a revised spending plan including the
layoffs.
17 police officers would have been laid off as well, but FOP Lodge 1 voted last week
to pass up pay raises, so those officers will stay on the force.
