Salesianum's Donte DiVincenzo and Brian O'Neill each scored 12 points as they overcame a determined St. Mark's defense to defeat their rivals 45-36 Friday night.
Open space was hard to find for the Sals' two stars, but they were able to distribute to teammates Shane Clark and Joe McCusker for important early three-pointers, and a late connection from DiVincenzo to O'Neill gave them a 4 point lead after eight minutes.
DiVincenzo made three of his four field goals, including a "3" in the second quarter to help get his team ahead 26-16 at the break.
After an O'Neill backdown and layup put the Sals up 12 early in the 3rd quarter, the Spartants countered with a 8-2 run which brought the score down to 6.
A DiVincenzo pass to Clark under the basket for a layup put the Sals back up 36-26 after three quarters, only to have the Spartans score the first 6 points of the final frame to make it 36-32 after a Peter Berardi 3-pointer.
The Sals hit 9-of-12 from the free-throw line down the stretch, and it was enough to hold off the Spartans and improve to 10-2 on the season. They remain unbeaten against Delaware opposition.
St. Mark's picked up 12 points from Matt Williams but fell to 8-3 on the campaign.
