Attorney General Beau Biden calls for a more modern crime lab in the wake of an evidence scandal at the state Medical Examiner's office that could jeopardize several criminal cases.

Biden says Delaware needs to build its own, independent, state-of-the-art crime lab.

He says evidence should not be sent to separate, private labs because Delaware facilities lack the capability or capacity. He says this process has resulted in delayed prosecutions and even compromised justice.

Biden points to a crime lab in Maryland as a model for Delaware though he doesn't mention how much a lab like this might cost.

"A new crime lab is the right thing to do for Delaware’s criminal justice system and the right thing to do for taxpayers," Biden said in a written statement.

WDEL has put out a request for comment from Attorney General Biden.
