Officers arrived at Witherspoon Lane about 3:30 p.m. after police received a 911 call that reported more than a dozen gunshots in the area, said MCpl. Gerald Bryda.

Witnesses told police two groups of people exchanged gunfire, Bryda said.

"It appears two groups got into an argument and then that's when the shots rang out," he said. "At that point everyone fled the area."

No injuries were reported but a handgun was recovered by officers, Bryda said.

The shootout was a display of gun violence rarely seen in Newark, he said.

"We have our fair share of things happening from time to time but a shootout such as this in broad daylight is very unusual for our city," he said.
