Quick start propels Blue Rocks to win
By Blue Rocks PR

Early offense and sterling pitching helped lead the Wilmington Blue Rocks to a 3-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium. The Rocks used a pair of first-inning runs to take a lead they would never relinquish thanks to three pitchers combining to fan 14 and allow just a single score on seven hits. With the triumph, Wilmington improves to 11-14 on the season.
The Rocks wasted little time on offense. Raul Mondesi opened the game with a single and then scored one out later on Zane Evans’ double to right-centerfield. Johermyn Chavez followed with a run-scoring single to right that pushed the Blue Crew edge to two runs. Wilmington reestablished that two-tally edge in the fifth. Daniel Rockett roped a lead-off double into the right-field corner and then came home on Bubba Starling’s soft liner to center one batter later.
That was more than enough for the Rocks’ pitching staff, as Jonathan Dziedzic, Glenn Sparkman and Mark Peterson combined to frustrate the Carolina offense all night. Dziedzic threw too many pitchers to make it through the requisite five frames in order to qualify for a win, but the left-hander did whiff eight Mudcats and yielded only one run on five hits in 4.2 frames.
Sparkman (1-0) entered with a man at first and two outs in the fifth.
The right-hander quickly ended that inning and then worked two more scoreless frames on his way to a victory. He struck out five and walked none while allowing just a one-out single in the seventh. Sparkman gave way to Peterson in the eighth, and the Blue Crew closer retired six of the seven batters he faced en route to his fifth save in as many tries in 2014.
The Blue Rocks continue their seven-game road trip on Saturday when they face the Mudcats again. Wilmington will send right-hander Christian Binford (1-1, 2.53) to the mound, while Carolina will counter with southpaw Shawn Morimando (3-0, 1.88).
