Hurricane season is less than one month away, and several agencies are urging you to get prepared.

Hurricane season is on the horizon, and you don't want to end up alone and afraid in the dark with a cell phone that's running out of battery life.

It happens more than you think, but is easily preventable, if you prepare in advance.

"Does everybody have their own flashlight with up-to-date batteries? Test out your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms," recommends Dave Scott, an emergency preparedness planner with New Castle County's Office of Emergency Management.

He says your emergency kit should also have...

"Key phone numbers written down somewhere. With today's technology, nobody remembers phone numbers any more," he said.

Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy served as wake-up calls for just how hard Delaware can be hit during hurricane season. Patrick Delaney, CEO of the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, says they'll be there to help with all your shelter needs.

"Making sure folks have a safe place to stay, food in their belly, you know I always call it a camp out with a 100+ people you've never met and may never see again, but have a lot of fun," said Delaney.

The Red Cross is urging you to download their free hurricane app where you can track conditions in your area and let others know you're safe, even when the power goes out.
