The First State Paw Draw gives Delawareans the chance to design the state's next animal welfare license plate.

"We do ask that the license plate include both dogs and cats because this will be worn on the cars of pet lovers," said Hetti Brown, Executive Director of the Office of Animal Welfare, under the Delaware Division of Public Health.

Brown says more than half of the plate's proceeds will go directly to the state's Spay and Neuter program.

"Spaying and neutering pets reduces types of cancers that can develop when pets are not fixed; it also allows pets to be not only be healthier over time, but be less likely to roam in search of a mate," Brown explains.

Most importantly...

"It reduces the number of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens that may wind up in shelters and unfortunately be euthanized because of lack of space and resources," said Brown.

Brown says the current animal welfare plate, which she proudly displays on her car, hasn't been updated since the nineties.

"I hope that people will purchase this plate and not only demonstrate the love for their pets, but also how they wish to help other animals in the community," she said.
