The state Legislature is pushing for more parental involvement in their child’s education, and the onus is on the schools.

Lieutenant Governor Matt Denn says, if House Bill 350 is passed, schools would ask parents to sign a compact, expressing their commitment to their child’s education. That commitment could include anything from helping with homework to volunteering in school.

Denn recognizes that increased parental involvement can be hard for single parents with several jobs, but says all it takes is a teacher-parent phone call every once in awhile to stay updated on a child’s progress

Schools would also be required to report the percentage of parents that actually sign the compacts.

Title One schools would also be required to report on their efforts to get parents more involved as a stipulation to receive that federal funding.

The bill’s chief sponsor, Newark RepresentativeTerry Schooley, says there’s a strong correlation between parent involvement in education and a child’s successful future.

She says increased parental involvement greatly decreases their chances of alcohol and substance abuse.
