Delaware's senior Senator has thrown his support behind a former aide, who's vying for Democratic nomination in the state treasurer race.

Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) endorsed Sean Barney in a video message released on Barney's YouTube channel.

Barney is challenging incumbent Chip Flowers in this year's Democratic primary race.

"He's running against an incumbent, a person I like and have no ill will toward, but in this case this is just a question of my admiration, really my reverence that I feel toward Sean Barney," Carper said in the video.

Barney is a former aide to Carper, who says he helped with policy on tax and budget issues before enlisting in the military. More recently, he was also the policy director for Gov. Markell.

The primary election for state Treasurer is Sept. 9.
