|VIDEO: Highlights from Lynchburg's second straight no-hitter|
Lynchburg's Cody Scarpetta and Benino Pruneda combined for a second straight no-hitter as the Hillcats defeated the Blue Rocks 5-0 at Frawley Stadium.
After Lucas Sims and Alex Wilson combined to no-hit Wilmington Thursday, Scarpetta (2-1), a former 1st round pick who started the season in the Independent League, took to the mound for Lynchburg.
He kept Wilmington off-balance, allowing only two balls out of the infield in his seven innings of work. Only a two out walk by Terrance Gore in the 6th inning and a hit by pitch to Bubba Starling in the 7th kept him from perfection. Scarpetta left the game leading 4-0 after striking out seven.
Much like Wilson did Thursday, Pruneda was called in by manager Luis Salazar to finish off the no-no.
Pruneda pitched a perfect 8th inning beginning with a strikeout of Jack Lopez to send the zero into the hits column to the 9th inning.
Gore walked for the second time to lead off the 9th inning, advancing to 2nd on a ground out by Raul Mondesi. Bubba Starling then popped out to bring Lynchburg to the point of history.
Jared Schlehuber nearly ruined the party by crushing an opposite field shot that had home run distance about 10 feet foul of the foul pole in right.
Pruneda settled down, and got him swinging on an outside pitch to complete the second straight no-hitter for Lynchburg.
Lynchburg pitching has now thrown 20 2/3 straight hitless innings, with Wilmington's last hit coming with one out in the 7th inning of Wednesday's offensively-heavy 11-7 loss.
The no-hitter overshadowed another strong performance by Wilmington starter Glenn Sparkman (3-2), who surrendered just a 2nd inning RBI single by Will Skinner in his six innings of work. He gave up seven hits while striking out 5 to drop his ERA to 1.76.
Wilmington hits the road Saturday as they battle Salem.
